April 29, 2016 - TechCrunch Messenger Chat Bot (http://m.me/TechCrunch) is the first few technology news service chat bots available on the Facebook Messenger Platform at launch. It is build on the ChatFuel platform, and it is more of a personalized news recommendations bot based on the user's preference along with the standard latest and popular stories as well as the ability to search for stories based on message entries.

We did a through review of the bot to see how usable it was and what our thoughts on it was. Below is a sample walkthrough of our experience:

Step 1: Greetings from TechCrunch

This is the initial greeting from TechCrunch chat bot with the option to subscribe to getting trending stories twice a day. It's an AI-based assistant powered by ChatFuel platform.

Step 2: Main Menu

When we typed "menu", it returned the main menu options with 3 Call To Action (CTA) scrollable items: 1) Official TechCrunch Bot, 2) Most Popular, and 3) Latest Headlines. Under the "Official TechCrunch Bot", we have the option to see the recommended stories, manage our subscriptions, and send feedbacks. In the other two ("Most Popular" and "Latest Headlines") items, we can show stories and subscribe to the respective news topic.

Step 3: Recommendations

We decided to tap "Recommendations" in the "Official TechCrunch Bot" section, and it returned a personalized recommended stories for us. We are thinking the bot tracks our behavior or our interest in their bot over time to recommend related stories; if that is the case, that's really impressive. The recommended stories are in a CTA scrollable list where we can either "View on Web" (directed to TechCrunch website) or "Read Here" which displays a text only version of the story into the messenger chat.

Step 4: Read Here Option

We decided to "Read Here" and received a message back in a pagination format where we can tap "Next Page" to read more. We really like the breakdown of the stories into pages, in terms of form factor and most importantly, for loading speed of the message.

Step 5: Manage Subscription

When we tapped "Manage Subscriptions", we got a message to subscribe to certain channels, in this case, it was "Most Popular" stories. Once we tapped "Subscribe", it added us to the subscription list to receive stories from it.

Step 6: Most Popular

Step 8: Ask a Question

When we want to search for a particular topic, we can simply ask for it. We decided to ask "Show me news with Apple", and it returned a CTA scrollable list of the latest headlines. We have the options to read on it on TechCrunch website or right inside Messenger. ChatFuel does a good job on parsing the question in natural language to keywords.

Step 9: Feedback

In the main menu, when we tapped the "Send Feedback" option, we got prompted to enter our feedbacks which TechCrunch will use to improve their chat bot (nice touch).

Conclusion

In conclusion, TechCrunch Chat Bot is really well designed with the partnership with ChatFuel from the navigation of the stories to the personalization / recommendation of trending popular news stories. The headline images of the stories are very polish and adds to the richness of the chat bot. The option to read the stories within the messenger pr on the TechCrunch website is a nice usability feature. The subscription of different type of stories gives us reason to return and use the chat bot again. As a technology news geeks, we highly recommend this chat bot.
